This article is based on the recent released research from the Pew Center. This article examines the boom cycle of Internet over the last 10 years.
Recalling those frightful events of 9/11, Iraq war, economic recession, the decade of 2000 doesn’t leave us with pleasing memory. However, the technological innovations including Internet, cellular phones, emails and social websites reached the peak over the last decade.
1. Perception of the Decade
Reviewing the survey reports as carried out by the Pew Team, it leaves us with the conclusion that the decade of 2000 was definitely not the happier one. About 50 percent of the respondents have an overall negative impression of the past decade (2000), while only 27 percent had positive remarks over these years.
2. Perception of Technology
Technological advances in terms of social networking, emails, and cellular phones share an extraordinary position in this re view of the “Perception of the Decade”. Blogs, Online shopping sites also share relatively positive remarks.
It is also interesting to note that the greater a respondent’s age, the lesser the probability of optimism in terms of viewing the technological changes. For example, 45 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 39 saw social networking websites as having positive effects on our society. But after the 50-years-old mark, the percentage has lowered significantly to between 25 and 21 percent.
3. Internet making Society a Better place to live in
Most of the respondents said that the Internet has definitely leaded our society to a better future. The survey results marks that the dot-com crash hasn’t effected our late nineties optimism.
Around 75% of younger respondents saw the world of www as a positive change, but only 42 percent of people aged 65 and older felt the same way. However these older respondents didn’t seem to think that the Internet was necessarily negative, either. These responses indicate that a huge mass is unsure of its impact or thinks its influence is negligible.
