Interesting Facts about Tobacco Smoking Revealed

Do you know that Tobacco smoking kills more than 5 million people every year? The number is very surprising because it is more than  HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria combined. And if the current trends continue, Tobacco use could kill more than 8 million people per year by 2030, and up to 1 billion people in total in the 21st century. These findings, and others are contained in the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2009.

Only 5.4% of the world’s population was covered by comprehensive smoke-free laws in 2008.  That means more than 94% of people remain unprotected by comprehensive smoke-free laws shows that much more work needs to be done, WHO said.

The report also describes countries’ efforts to implement the tobacco control package called MPOWER, those are WHO Framework Convention and its guidelines includes-

  • monitor tobacco use and the policies to prevent it;
  • protect people from tobacco smoke;
  • offer people help to quit tobacco use;
  • warn about the dangers of tobacco;
  • enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and
  • raise taxes on tobacco.

Less than 10% of the world’s population is covered by any one of these measure, the report states.

Other key findings of the report include the following.

  • Five more countries –– Djibouti, Egypt, Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia and Mauritius –– met the best practices for health warnings on cigarette packages.
  • Three more countries –– Israel, Romania and the United Arab Emirates –– offered comprehensive help to quit.
  • Only one country –– Panama –– joined the small group of countries that bans all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. More than 90% of people lack protection from tobacco industry marketing.
  • Six more countries –– Czech Republic, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, the Netherlands and Seychelles –– levied tobacco taxes higher than 75% of retail price.
  • Of the world’s 100 most populous cities, 22 are smoke-free.

And Finally,

Great piece of information. Most people using tobacco are already aware of the harm. It the numbers that you have put in your article which is alarming.

I’m a smoker and I enjoy smoking. I recently had to quit due to having a bad cold, and it was incredibly easy. 6 days in and I wasn’t even thinking about cigarettes anymore. Then I made the conscious choice to start smoking again. I even slept on it after deciding before I had one.

These facts do next to nothing for me. It’s like telling me not to eat at McDonalds because heart disease is the number one killer in America.

The reason they do nothing for me is because they refer to the population as a whole, and not ME as an individual. Sure, I sound egocentric when I say that, but I honestly believe that recognising this would make your advertising much more effective.

For example, the only warning label I’ve ever seen that’s actually made me think twice before buying it was the label with the curved cigarette, letting smokers know that smoking causes impotence. That one made me think, personally. So I gave the pack back to the clerk and asked for one with a different picture on it.

I hope you can parse through any part of this that comes off as arrogant and consider what I’m trying to say here about targeting the self-centred individual that we all inherently are.

Why is this a bad thing? I see the 5.4% as a bad thing. The government does not need to pass liberty-crushing laws to protect people from something that is THEIR choice to do and their RIGHT to do. Smoking in America and many other places around the world is a right, not a privilege, and taking away someone’s rights simply because you do not agree with a practice is EVIL.

Thank you all for encouraging words. Thanks Tim for sharing your experience and thoughtz.

You are right Flexomickey that smoking is people’s right. It’s bad to protect those rights by any laws. but WHO wants see all countries implementing MPOWER. Of course, the MPOWER is against people’s rights.

Thanks for your suggestion DFranklin.

what you fail to realize is that the world is overpopulated as it is. it should never stand to hold more than 500,000. Everyone else should enjoy their death guilt free. So please stop trying to scare people with your “facts”.

12.11.09

I agree wholly with flexomickey. If governments are so concerned with passing laws to limit dangerous activities, why are people allowed to eat fast food in cities. The smell is at least as bad as second hand smoke, and the number of people who die of heart disease is considerably higher than those that die of smoking related issues.

Which makes me need to ask the question of how they decide that 5 million people are killed annually by smoking. While there is no sane claim that smoking is good for your health in any way, and by all common sense would be something that attributes to cancers, there is a complete lack of hard scientific data that backs that claim up. The amount of other carcinogenic gases that most humans inhale on a daily basis would ruin all studies. For people who cite the claim that the US government has made regarding the danger, read the report as opposed to the press release that came after. The scientific data showed NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE from smoking/2nd hand smoking to non. I get annoyed with credible looking articles like these, that mis-represent information to build a fervor that is for no other purpose than propaganda.

But on the flip side, if smoking will cause my noodle to flop, then I would have to be totally against it.

have you looked at those chemicals???????
notice how you use all of them??????
but somehow when you smoke its worse?????
why are all these chemicals leagal to use if they are so bad???
99% of those chemicals are used everyday by us but somehow the cigs are the only cause of cancer??
do the math if im 30 and smoked for 15 years its still 15 years less than ive been exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis.
wake up unless you ban everything which isnt going to happen there is no gain. 99% of those same chemicals are used by choice everyday where is the second hand cleaning laws? the second hand driving laws? it has nothing to do with the cigs and everything to do with ppl not liking them. yes i know those that smokers have higher cancer rates but so do drinkers and waste disposal techs and mechanics and cleaning persons. what about your car it gives off the same smoke but i can keep you from driving. what about the drug interactions from the doctors (which kills more ppl than illegal drugs btw) isnt it funny how one is protected and sanctioned and the other is outlawed?

just my 2cp have fun and remember i hate your perfume just as much as you hate my smoke but one of us is protected by law while the other is sent outside. (btw that smelly perfume has VOC’s in it that are known to cause cancer too)

bye

@Flexomickey

You may have understood it wrong. It’s not about YOUR right to smoke. It’s about everyone else’s right not to be exposed to your smoke. Want to smoke? Do it at home or out in the open, where others don’t have to deal with it.

And yes, I’m a smoker and I hate not being able to do it in a restaurant, after dinner. But it makes sense.

12.11.09

@Jorge Pereira

This is flawed thinking as the US is a Republic NOT a democracy. Your right to this clean air does not trump my right to dirty it up with a legal product. You can leave or seek out a place that fits your needs but you have no right to force private property owners to ban a legal product under penalty of law.

Until cars and industry, the number 1 and 2 polluters, give off NO harmful emissions then no one that drives or buys anything has the right to complain.

I am a non smoker, never tried it never will but i will NEVER tell someone not to smoke around me, if it bothers me and at time it does, i just move somewhere else. It really isnt that hard.

Jorge, im not singling you out i just wanted you to know that not all non smokers walk around with their heads between their cheeks.

12.11.09

In other new, unhealthy diets and stress killed several million non smokers. They are believed to have worried themselves to death while telling other people what they can and can’t do.

Really though, let people smoke, if you don’t like it, leave. I’m more concerned with chemical pollution in the food and water than tobacco smoke.

And no, I am not a smoker.

12.11.09

Would any of you nonsmokers complain to someone overweight or obese about their health draining medical resources ,or that being too fat is bad for their health just like you guys heckle smokers?

12.11.09

the article is only partially correct. sure all of those chemicals are in cigarettes, but it is incorrect and misleading to call it tobacco smoke. I smoke a pipe and pipe tobacco is very very different than cigarette tobacco.

12.11.09

We’re only alive on this earth for the blink of a cosmic eye

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em

12.11.09

At some point it’s peoples decision to smoke or not, i personally do not smoke and never will but pushing so hard for something that doesn’t effect you even though the facts are already in the open seems more like you attempting to valiantly pick up a crusade to seem morally just when you achieving exactly the opposite. defeat smoking by not smoking not by wasting your (and others) time with more beating of a horse that was shot in the face decades ago.

12.11.09

I have been smoking now for 20 plus years and have wanted to quit on many occasions but just couldn’t keep off of them. Over the last six months or so I have been looking into electronic cigarettes and decided to give one a try. I chose one from Green Smoke and man am I HAPPY. This thing has made it easy to quit and now I can smoke anywhere because all it puts out is water vapor. You can get various levels on nicotine to satisfy the need and taper off over time till you’re done. Check out: http://www.dailyvapor.com for a list of popular e-cigs.

12.11.09

great article on the reasons to quit smoking. You are welcome to contribute to my site as well if you wish http://www.to-quit-smoking.org – it would definitely be appreciated!

12.11.09

I wonder how people even get addicted.

12.11.09

It may be a smoker’s right to smoke and die a slow death, if thats what they so choose…

But what about a non-smoker’s right to clean air? Ok, you make the conscious decision to smoke while others make the conscious decision NOT to smoke for one reason or another. If you want to smoke, fine, that’s your “right”, or choice, whatever…but don’t subject it others who want nothing to do with smoking.

Smoking should be done outside, anyway, as it makes the indoors very hard to breathe in, leaves odors that do not go away, and turns everything yellow.

It also drives me crazy when I see people smoking around children, as they have absolutely no choice to be around it or not.
