Microsoft’s latest release Hyper-V is a server role in Windows server 2008 that allows you to run multiple operating systems in Virtual Machines on single physical machine. Now wondering what a virtual machine could be like?? Then here is the answer. A virtual machine is a software-based instance of an operating system that uses shared physical hardware.
When we are talking about the virtual machine, I find it important to tell you about the virtual Hard disk too. Well, a virtual HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is a file that lives on a physical HDD that acts like a physical HDD on a virtual machine.
BRILLIANT, I WANT TO GET MY PC VIRTUALIZED????
If this is what that’s going in your mind. Then wait up!! Make sure you have your PC capable enough to hole the weight of the virtual machine. The hardware requirements for virtualizing your PC are (here Hyper-V):
- Server 2008 64-bit Enterprise or Data Center edition
- RAM-4GB “minimum”
- Processor-64bit-Must support virtualization
- HDD-Vary
- Network Card-At least 2
The reason I recommend you to use Windows server 2008 is that you can have License for Virtual server for FREE!!

Though Virtualization can be a very effective means of having multiple servers inside a physical machine. However a few precautionary steps can boost up Virtual server performance.
- Selecting server with fewer Resources hungry can be beneficial.
- Legacy application that require older version of server can be virtualized e.g. windows server2003, NT
- Virtual server can be used of testing purpose.
However if you want to migrate you server to a virtual server, there are a few tools available for free download. Such as-
- Virtual server migration tools- It is available for free at the Internet. Just Google or Bing it out on the search engine. However this tool is meant only for small server and it natively belongs to windows server 2005. This tool is however not recommended for big servers.
- System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM): This tool isn’t a freeware. But this tool has a greater graphics configuration that makes it easy to migrate to big servers.
Just get your PC virtualized by HYPER-V and start enjoying multiple OS in your single PC.
